Going to the beach includes way too much--for my taste--sand but, not really a sand trap! Just south of Dog Beach is a nice little park adjacent to the beach where you can enjoy the sun and ocean without getting sandy all over.

Several places in San Diego offer grassy areas near the water, but on these are located on the bay side, not the ocean side. Ocean Beach does have a beach side grassy area and I for one appreciate the option.

Fun Alternatives: There are few beach and bay areas that offer the alternative of sitting on grass rather than the sand so while you are here take advantage, have a picnic, throw a frisbee or just spread a towel out and relax. Of course, also beware that the ocean breeze can lull you into falling asleep and whether you are on the sand or on the grass, the sun can blister the skin--even on cloudy days.
