On the first 3 floors of this gorgeous colonial buidling is the Sydney public library. It inlcudes a large scale model of the city sunk into the floor of the foyer. The models is really helpful for getting your bearings. Best of all it is free :-) I did find myself feeling a little giddy looking at it and prefer when it was located above ground on the 4th floor a few years back.

The library has loads of international newspapers and internet terminals that are free for members and have a minimal charge for others.

On the 5th floor is Cafe Sydney, great views over Sydney Harbour and good food although rather expensive. Late in the evening Cafe Sydney becomes a bar with good live music from 10pm.

Address: 31 Alfred Street, Circular Quay
Directions: Right on Circular Quay opposite the station.
