"Orecchio di Dionisio" Top 5 Page for this destination Ear of Dionysius - Orecchio di Dionisio Tip by Lalique

To the right of the theatre there is a delightful garden with orange trees, palm trees and magnolias, thus with a lot of shade (wow!) In the garden one can find a strangely shaped cave, which is called the Ear of Dionysius. It is former limestone excavations and I was told that lime laid in such way between the harder rocks, the techniques was to wash out the softer stone, so due to washing out the lime appeared this ear with btw extremely smooth walls.
It was the artist Caravaggio who gave the cave its name.
