Viniero's: "Simply Wonderful Italian Desserts" Veniero's Tip by agroshong
Veniero's, New York City: 7 reviews and 10 photos
Well known for its cakes which are ordered by people worldwide, Veniero's maintains a small, unassuming store front well on the east side of the Village that it has occupied since it first opened. The history alone adds a certain magical air to a Veniero's visit.
The entrance leads you into a narrow front section of the store. To your left, a wall of Italian cookies, cheesecakes, and a waiting staff that would feed you an entire cheesecake to make sure that you liked it before they'd sell it to you. To your right is a cooler containing a variety of cakes including their infamous strawberry cakes. Layered with fresh cream, light white cake, and slices of bright red strawberries, it has been my birthday cake of choice ever since I moved to New York City.
Towards the back, patrons will find a seating area to enjoy a bit of dessert along with a variety of beverages. This area never seems to be busy when I've visited but I've heard that weekends are usually the high point of activity. When it comes down to it, most people visit here to do take out.
Veniero's is really for those who are denizen New Yorkers willing to hike to the far side of the Village for some tasty treats or for day-trippers looking for a luscious take home treat after a long day of walking about the city.
All in all, you won't be disappointed. Great selection, reasonable prices, and friendly wait staff will ensure a successful experience
Favorite Dish: Try a variety of their italian cookies to take home. See one that you've never tasted before? Just ask the clerk who's assigned themselves to you to let you have one for taste. The service clerks here have never balked at my requests to taste something before buying it and often press me into trying a variety of things, not to increase my purchase, but to simply see me enjoy the food. Also on your list of items to try should be a slice of the Sicilian cheesecake. Plain or with cherries baked into the cake, this cheesecake comes in the shape of a brick which the clerk will slice like it was butter. A few bites of this rich delight will be enough for a lifetime so don't let your eyes think for your stomach and order a small portion. The regular (NY Style) cheesecake is a high quality for sure if you want to play it safe; the flavor rich and succulent with a smooth texture.
