"Pammukale and Hierapolis" Turkey Things to Do Tip by Jannick_L.

Another bizarre, yet fascinating natural wonder from weird and wonderful Turkey is Pammukale. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the petrified waterfall at Pammukale is a lustrous white calcium formation created by years and years of calcium rich mineral water tumbling over the cliff edge to form what is literally translated as the ‘cotton castle’. The Romans - never ones to miss out on a good thing - capitalised on the mineral rich waters and built a spa town – Hieropolis above the waterfall in 190BC. With Roman baths, temples and a 12,000-seater theatre Hieropolis together with Pammukale constitute a national park, and it is still possible to bathe in the mineral rich waters for a small price. So, when in Turkey….do as the Romans did.
