"The Grand Opera House " Galveston Nightlife Tip by keeweechic

Galveston Nightlife: 8 reviews and 9 photos

The Grand Opera House has seen many international stars in her day such as Sarah Bernhardt, Paderewski and Anna Pavlova and is one of the few remaining theatres of its era in Texas and of course listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It has also been named "The Official Opera House of Texas."

Throughout its history it has survived the storms of 1900 and 1915 as well as Hurricanes Carla and Alicia followed by years of neglect. After the devastating storm of 1900 The Grand was quickly repaired and reopened. The front opening of the building is small and almost invisible but the rear of the building is plastered with large paintings of past entertainers.
