This cathedral, Lucca's Duomo, founded in the 6th century by S. Frediano, has a 13th century fašade decorated with sculpted pilasters of a variety of shapes and some very fine bas-reliefs. The entrance has beautiful carved arches and huge doors. Among the sights inside the dark cathedral, is the much valued Volto Santo (Holy Face), a crucifix that is believed to be an actual portrait of Jesus Christ and was said to have been carved by a friend of Jesus. Also here is the remarkable Tomb of Illaria del Carretto, a sculpture of the tomb of a young bride by Jacopo della Quercia. She was much loved, and when she died in childbirth, she was greatly mourned.
