Monastery of our Savior and St. Jacob is located on the approaches to Rostov from the Moscow side, and can be seen for many kilometers.
It was founded in the XIV century by Rostov bishop Iakov. The first stone church in the monastery - the five-dome Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception - was put up in 1686. The cathedral has frescoes of the XVII century.
In 1836 the Church of St. Jacob, consecrated to the founder of the monastery, was built there. The church has relics of Rostov Saints and the Vatopedskaya wonderworking icon of the Holy Lady. Part of the monastery necropolis has also remained there. Now the monastery has begun functioning again.
