There has been a church in the Vatican for nearly 2000 years. The one that stands now, under the probable place of dead of Saint Peter (it was an ancient Roman Circus), it the contributed work of people like Bernini, Bramante, Raphael, Giacomo della Porta and, specially, Michelangelo. We ought Michelangelo the construction of the incredible dome (the tallest ever build) and the overwhelming Pieta, a sculpture of such an incredible beauty that makes hard to stop looking at the face of the Virgin.

Apart from that, St. Peter is a huge and luminous cathedral. The walk along the popes's tombs (including St. Peter's one) is awesome.
