"Packing List" Craig Packing List Tip by Shinaku

Craig What to Pack: 1 reviews and 0 photos

Luggage and bags: Pack everything in WATERPROOF bags--duffels work great, but any good bag will do. It rains a lot here, and sometimes luggage will sit on the floatplane dock for a bit while loading the plane, and the ground is likely to be wet wherever you set your bag down.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Wear water-repellant footgear and always carry good raingear. Bring a sweater or two. Summer temps are 50's and 60's, and winter run mostly to the 30's and low 40's, although it occasionally gets down to the low teens. Dress for wind and rain.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: If you require special supplies, bring them with you. You can find the basics in Craig, but it's a small town, so you won't find a lot of unusual shopping items. If you will need a prescription filled while here, best to let the pharmacy know in advance--it's small and local.

Photo Equipment: You can get just about whatever you need in Craig, but if you go out around Prince of Wales Island (and you'll surely want to do that), take extra of whatever you'll need. Shoppping is pretty limited in the other towns on the Island.

Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: Again, be prepared for rain. If you're going to camp out, have a good tent with a good rain fly, and learn about keeping your gear dry. Your tent should be big enough to store most of your gear inside. Have good tight food containers, as there are numerous black bear on the Island.

Miscellaneous: You can camp all over the Island, or you can lodge in one of the towns and see the Island via day trips. There is a good guide to Prince of Wales Island available from the Prince of Wales Island Chamber of Commerce (powcc@aptalaska.net).
