The Winnedumah Hotel

Walter Dow of Burbank built this hotel in 1927 at the request of the townsfolk. It was a popular haven for early movie stars who came to make their Westerns in the Alabama Hills near Lone Pine.
The owners (in1993) are real nice people, After a long drive we arrived in Independence looking for a place to sleep. It was late and we were exhausted. There is no other place for hours around. Although the complete area was booked out because of a convention and they had no room left at all, they let us sleep in their office on a fold-out bed. They only charged us 10$ for the 'bed' and breakfast! At sunrise, their dusty little office showed us a great view of the mountains. The bathroom still had the original fixtures of the 1920's.The hotel was being restored at the time, and I am sure it looked great when it was finished.
