"El Santuario de Chimayo" Santa Cruz Things to Do Tip by 10eke

Santa Cruz Things to Do: 1 reviews and 1 photos

This lovely small church has an interesting history. It was built over the place where a friar found a crucifix. The crucifix was carried to the local church but disappeared three times, to be found again where it was originally discovered. The local priest gave up and decided to build a church over the crucifix's preferred resting place. Miraculous healings occurred in Chimayo and the place slowly gained its reputation as the Lourdes of America. It is now a National Historic Landmark.

A service was going on when we arrived, it didn't have the feel of a religious-tourist place, just a beautiful little church in an iddylic setting.

Address: 40 miles north of Santa Fe, New Mexico
