"Forget Oktoberfest!" Germany Local Custom Tip by Sjalen

Germany Local Customs: 320 reviews and 361 photos

I have never been myself but many German friends call Oktoberfest in Munich very overrated. What I HAVE been to and can recommend is a Schützenfest. They are announced along the roads and locals can always advise you where the fun is. You will find a more genuine party with some amusements, candied apples, barbecue and of course a beer tent where the beer is a lot cheaper than in Munich. These parties were originally held to see who was the best shot in the village. Today, there are even big cities with their own Schützenfest, Hannover being the biggest (see link). I know there's a Swedish flag in this picture! There was a whole lot of us, outsinging the Germans :-)
