"Istana" means palace in Malay. This colonial building on the other side of the Sarawak river was the residence of the Brooke family, British colonialist rulers who acted like a kind of rajahs during the XIX century.

Today the Istana is the home of the Gobernor of the State.

It should be noted that Sarawak, along with Sabah, Pinang and Melaka, are the only States in Malaysia that are not ruled by a sultan. This is maybe due to their distinct history, with a more intense colonial presence that diluted to a certain extent the deep Malay muslim feeling.
