Walthamstow Stadium: "Feeling Lucky" London Nightlife Tip by Imbi

  Race is on
by Imbi

Fourteen times a night they set the hounds on a 400-meter sand track in pursuit of a poor, furry (albeit fake) bunny. Two systems of betting are available: a 20-pence minimum "tote" on the periphery and five-pound minimum trackside bets. Odds on a dog can change even a few minutes before each race, resulting in absolute mayhem trackside, with bookmakers shouting rapidly in Cockney dog-racing jargon. Race enthusiasts range from working-class families to old blokes with unashed smokes hanging precariously from their lips to trendy 20-somethings out on a lark. One geezer was overheard telling a young spectator, "I've been placing bets on these dogs for 25 years. I'd advise you not to play."
