Igreja de São Vicente de Fora, Lisbon: 20 reviews and 39 photos

This was one of my favorite sights in Lisbon. The monastery includes a large church, cloister, garden cafe, and underground exhibit showing the original monastery cistern. The church itself is a huge, barrel-vaulted structure with an massive carved baldacchino altar (unfortunately, you can't get close up to look at it). Around the cloister, the walls of which covered with azulejo tiles, there are beautifully decorated rooms. Some of these have amazing tiled frecoes on the walls, some contain the tombs of notable Portuguese citizens and rulers, and a stunning marble-inlaid chapel comes near the end of the tour. Upstairs in the cloister, there is a fascinating exhibit of tile murals depicting 38 fables written by the French renaissance author Jean de la Fontaine. Finally, you can climb up to the roof to get some of the best views available of Lisbon. Take at least two hours to see the whole complex.
