"Pilferage in Paradise" Hawaii (State of) Warnings Or Dangers Tip by Ric
Hawaii (State of) Warnings and Dangers: 99 reviews and 86 photos
While most of Hawai'i is welcoming for visitors, all is not perfect in 'Paradise.' Rental cars are an easy mark. Especially at tourist spots, e.g. Blowhole, the Pali Lookout, etc. always lock the car, carry valuables with you, and don't leave things visible in the backseat. Burglary is the usual mode; robbery is infrequent.
For some young people from economically-strapped families, burglarising the tourist car is considered both a prank and a relatively minor violation which evens out the disparity between themselves and the 'rich tourist.' Unfortunately there is a criminal element as well, particularly focussed around the drug trade.
Out in the countryside, it is always useful to have a local person with you.
