"The popular image of the big..." Shop Till You Drop Tip by slaybelle

Shop Till You Drop, Seattle: 2 reviews and 2 photos

<font color='red' size='3'>
The popular image of the big public market in Seattle is
the flying fish. Not the species, but the fish that
fishmongers throw at each other.

A nice image, but we wanted to learn more. We took the
walking tour of the Pike Place Market. We learned about the
history of the market (third oldest in the US), its tenants
(600 persons rent an apartment or a studio on the
premises), its activities (a daycare center, a soup
kitchen, a clinic), its shops and its mascot, Rachel the
hog. Of course, our guide showed us the greatest
places to eat in the Market. The power of suggestion worked
- at the end of the tour we were famished.

As for the flying fish, sale or no sale, the fishmongers
still throw some around every 10 minutes or so. Something
to keep the legend alive and the tourists happy.

Tours start at the Market Heritage Center, 1531 Western Ave. tour prices $7.00 adults
