  The Shotover River

The next day we had a free morning to spend and some brave man and women decided to experience a jet boat ride on the Shotover River about 5 km from Queenstown.
The Shotover Jet boats are specially developed for use in the Shotover River Canyons. They are powered by a highly modified 502 cubic inch 8.2 litre Chevrolet V8 engine, running on LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas). This drives a ?Hamilton? Jet, without an external propeller to provide speeds up to 70 kph. So the boat can operate in very shallow waters (minimum 10 cm).
It?s quite an experience to drive at high-speed trough the narrow canyon, brush pasting dangerous rocks and trees. When the driver puts his finger in the air and twists it around you have to brace yourself, because that?s the sign the boat will make a 360° spin at full speed. Imagine the splashing of the water. Thank goodness, we got lifejackets and spray jackets to protect us against the water. If you want to have a shot of a pure adrenalin into your veins, do it!
