TSS Earnslaw - Walter Peak Sheep Station

In the late afternoon we stepped aboard a real steamship for a cruise on the beautiful Waikatipu Lake. The ship is named after Mount Earnslaw, the highest peak in the region. She is 168 feet in length, 24 feet across the beam and weights 330 tons. The twin screw steamer was built in Dunedin, dismantled and transported by railway to Kingston at the lake?s southern tip where is was reassembled. Down in the engine room things are still the same as they were in 1912. The cruising speed is 11 knots. Therefore the TSS Earnslaw has to develop 500 horsepower, which means the burning of 1 Ton coal per hour.
