What a marvelous fusion of East and West! St. Mark's is the heart and soul of Venice and has been since its original consecration in AD 832. It burned down a century later, but was rebuilt in the 11th century. At the time, Venice recognized Byzantium as the world's cultural mecca and as a result, the architecture of the basilica reflects a decidedly eastern model.
The interior is simply breathtaking, adorned by art by greats like Tintoretto and Titian. Gold seemingly glitters at every turn and the church is laid out in the shape of a Greek cross and topped by five beautiful domes.
