"Bridge of Sighs" Ponte dei Sospiri Tip by acemj

Ponte dei Sospiri, Venice: 138 reviews and 210 photos

Named 'bridge of sighs' after the laments of the prisoners who were sentenced in the Doge's Palace and then sent sighing across this bridge into the 'new' prisons in the adjacent building. The new prisons were given that name because they were built for the overspill of prisoners from the 'old' prisons contained within the walls of the Doge's Palace.
