"Santa Maria Maggiore" Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore Tip by acemj

Basilica Santa Maria Maggiore, Rome: 74 reviews and 182 photos

If you walk from the train station to your lodging, you'll probably come across this magnificent church as I did. I didn't go inside until a few days later on a Sunday morning during Mass.
Surprisingly, it became my favorite church in Rome! It was built on the hill where a 3rd century pope witnessed a sudden and miraculous snowfall in the middle of the summer. The ceiling will leave you speechless and is said to be gilded with the first gold brought from the New World.
