Beguinage - The Beguinage was founded in 1245 by the Countess of Flanders, Margaretha of Constantinopel. Apparently in the 13th century some people were attracted to a purer form of religion. People of both sexes decided to follow this new movement. It seems the official religious institutions were suspicious of these new sects and they were persecuted. This photograph is of the entrance gates, which have the date 1776. However a lot of the houses are from a much earlier time than that. Some even from the 15th and 16th century.
