The Hofburg (Winter Palace) was formerly the winter residence of the Habsburgs This was the Imperial Habsburg's palace until 1918. It is now a collection of museums, apartments and also includes part of the Spanish Riding School. The first structures were built in 1279, and the final additions were completed as the Habsburg Empire finally crumbled at the dawn of the 20th century.
The Imperial Palace now days has many purposes. It is home to the offices of the Austrian President along with the International Convention Centre and also a chapel. Every Sunday this chapel is used by the Vienna Boy’s Choir who sing the mass there. There is also a hall where the Spanish Riding School’s Lipizzan stallions perform. Within the building are several museums, private and official apartments and state rooms which are open to public viewing.
