St Bartholomew's is also known as the Kaiserdom (Imperial Cathedral) because many Holy Roman Emperors were crowned here. Originally built in 1290 and rebuilt after World War II, it still houses many of the original Gothic carvings and retains its distinctive red sandstone facade and Gothic styling. Its most notable features include a stunning life-size crucifixion group carving, a 15th-century altar, and the exterior's 300-foot-tall, sandstone tower. At the west end of the Imperial Cathedral is a 1970's excavation site of bath houses (75-110AD) and various other buildings.
