In 1912 pioneer filmmaker Carl Laemmle, an immigrant from Bavaria, started the Chicago-based Universal Film Manufacturing Co. Three years later, Laemmle transferred his company to Los Angeles and officially opened Universal City on a 230 acre ranch on March 15, 1915.
