"Santa Maria della Salute Church" Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute Tip by keeweechic

As you stare up at the soaring dome of this magnificent basilica, remember that it owes its existence to plague-ridden fleas. It was built (1631) in thanksgiving for the end of a plague epidemic.

The church is built on an octagonal design with two domes and faces out on the Grand Canal. It was built on a raised platform to allow the development of a wide flight of steps which serves to emphasise the celebrational function of the edifice.
