The Basilica di San Marco (St. Mark's) is the most famous building in Venice. The church was built to honour the apostle Mark. Hanging from inner walls are great art works and there more than 43,000 ft of gold mosaics. The Pala d'oro an estimated 250 gold plated paintings and is incredibly covered some 1,300 pearls, 300 emeralds ,400 garnets, 90 rubies, 90 amethysts, and 300 sapphires. The body of St Mark is stored in the alcove. After a fire in 976 it was lost only to be rediscovered about 100 years later.

While you can take a tour through the basilica daily, the best time to visit San Marco is during a high mass.
