The Florence Cathedral is dedicated to Santa Maria del Fiore (Our Lady of the Flower) is also known as the Duomo. Construction started in 1150 on the site of an earlier church but plans for what was to have been a massive cathedral had to be abandoned owing to the Black Death of 1348 and technical problems resulting form an unlevelled foundation.

The dome is octagonal in shape and was built without the aid of scaffolding and was considered the greatest engineering feat of the early Renaissance.

Address: Piazza Duomo, Firenze
