City Walls, Avignon: 1 reviews and 1 photos
Favorite thing: Approaching Avignon, the first thing you see as you enter the city perimeters from the south are the walls and towers that seem to rise up from a country covered with olives. The exterior of these magnificent walls, begun by Innocent VI (1352-1362) and finished by Urban V (1362-1370). In the fourteenth century, there were seven gates, two others have been added.
Fondest memory: One of the scariest things was the coach I was in trying to manoeuvre through one of the very small arches at a very sharp right angle. Our driver had to be commended, he knew exactly what he was doing but we all held our breath until he had us safely through.
