when we were driving up to alaska, a very fat man in glenallen told us the dangers of stealing in alaska. 'if you steal anything here, you can't get out. we're shut off from everything. they'll get you if you steal anything.' well, i was wondering what he was implying. we did have long hair and hadn't had a shower in at least a week. the border patrol WILL PULL YOU OVER at the checkpoint if you look 'suspicious.' meaning, long hair, hikers that haven't taken a shower, hippie looking types, etc. alaskans are proud people. respect them. especially the natives. we met an athabaskan (say 'half a gas can with an a') named george. it was indeed the most intense conversation i've ever had with a human being. he was an alcoholic, vietnam vet. he was a very spiritual man though. he talked with us for hours about times in nam and about how his grandfather taught him how to hunt moose and sheep. if you are lucky and fortunate enough to meet someone like george, listen to him. no matter how crazy you think he is. he'll change the way you think.
