take a side trip to earthquake park in anchorage. it's a short hike along the banks of the captain cook inlet (the second largest inlet in the world). when the tide is out, it's an amazing site. people that wade out into the inlet and have been caught when it goes out have been caught in the mud and been stuck and have died. this is no joke, if you go swimming (not recommended) check tide schedules. you'll need to take lots of bug spray because earthquake park is a great breeding ground of alaska's state bird, the mosquito. another place to see is at the end of the park and the end of the airport at the point. drive past earthquake park and follow the road to the parking lot on the right. on a good day you can see Denali, five hours away. in any case, it's a great view of the inlet and of mt. susitna, the sleeping lady. if you're there, check out our old campsite back in the woods along the bank. if the tree still hangs out over the dropoff, feel free to swing from the branch to the other side of the ground. watch out though, it's about a 200 ft. drop to the rocks below!!
