Teotihuacán is the most important and the largest of Pre-Aztec ruin-cities in Central Mexico, 40 Km northeast of Mexico City, almost at the centre of an alluvial plain that slopes from Otumba in the northeast to Tepexpan in the southwest shortly before it joins what is left of the ancient lake of Texcoco.
The city was erected in the 2nd century B.C. At the 6th century, about 150.000 people lived in the city. Between 650 and 750, the city fell into disrepair. The Aztecs in the 12th century regarded the city as a mythical cemetery. The chessboard outlines with two central axles were under the “Avenue of Dead” which dates from around 200.
