Favorite thing: See Fort Sumpter...It's where the' War between the States' (Civil War) began. The boat ride back from Sumpter to Charleston also provides you with a stunning view of the 'holy city'.
The city itself...take a walking or carriage tour of Charleston. It's worth the expense.
Don't miss out on another great fort to see when in Charleston, Fort Maultrie, on the coastline just north of the Charleston Bay...a coastal defense fort that was used from the Civil war through WWII.It is preserved now as a WWII defense fort and is almost like stepping back in time.
Don't see any of Charleston UNTIL you go to the Visitor Center. It is one of the nicest visitor centers I have been to.
Another point of great interest to some is the Patriots Landing area where there are several naval vessels including the USS Yorktown aircraft carrier is docked. The YORKTOWN is a floating naval air museum, with over 40 different types of aircraft to view on the hangar deck.
Fondest memory: The quaint and unique architechture of Charleston in addition to the dozens of churches in the city (somewhere near 70, I believe). The market area in the center of town is unique, affording some good buys on souvenirs. There is also an abundance of good eateries and drinking establishments in the heart of the city.
