Vodka, pride and danger of Russian society
by Pavlik_NL

Be open to the Russians with whome you contact and they will take you into their culture a little. Although many things you will not understand (it's just the way they do it and most of them do not know any other way), it will be intresting and refreshing for your mind.

Few little homely things:

Like Japanese, Russians wear slippers inside their appartments. Some have guestslippers, if not walk on your socks or barefoot (whatever you do, put out your shoes).

When drinking alcoholic drinks with every new glass (and sometimes even with every new sip) a toast has to be made. You will be treated as a hero if you make one towards the host in a way of thanking her/him.

For men: be helpfull towards women and stay out of the kitchen (unless the dinner table is there and you are invited in). Despite some more modern women's wishes, Russia is still hopelessly oldfashioned and emancipation very underdevelopped.

Russians are proud of their history (it's mostly the present that worries them), even though the history of their nation is stained with blood and has many black pages. So, never insult or be denegrating towards mother Russia.
