"Inch Abbey was awe-inspiring! ..." Ireland Favorite Tip by lorino

Favorite thing: Inch Abbey was awe-inspiring! About a 2 mi. walk from town. The abbey built by de Courcy for the Cisterians in 1180 over an earlier Irish monastic site, is visible across the river from the Down Cathedral. The abbey was in use until approx 1541. The beautiful settings along the marshes of the River Quoile is quite memorable. .75p for entrance, you'll probably happen upon a tour in progress and can join in. Of course the gatekeeper is even more knowledgable in my opinion...knows all the stuff of legend not in the books and is (in true Irish form) happy to chat....The cemetary alongside dates back to mid 1600's (no Cisterterian monks here!).

Fondest memory: Lovely to sit and look at the view of Down Cathedral across the river...ahhh! Nice conversation with a gentleman who came over the hill walking his 2 dogs. My most enjoyable moments in Ireland were these...unplanned, spur of the moment, down right enjoyable conversation with locals!
