"El Baul - this is an Olmec..." Guatemala Off The Beaten Path Tip by DianeDundee

Guatemala Off The Beaten Path: 62 reviews and 92 photos

El Baul - this is an Olmec site - they predate the Mayans in the area and it is still used today as a place of worship by the Mayans - it is in the middle of a corn field close to Santa Lucia Cotzumalguapato - two Olmec statues - one a mans head buried in the ground but still 4 feet tall - and the other a lintel - they are on a mound - under a sacred banyan tree - we were with a Mayan guide and at the time we visited we were lucky enough to see a Shaman performing a ritual - he had just sacrificed a chicken at the foot of the statue and we could see its big yellow feet burning! He was also burning a huge bundle of cigars and candles as offerings - white candles for health, red for protection and also black - reminding us that Shamans can do harm as well as good!
