"Vieques, an island on the east..." Puerto Rico Off The Beaten Path Tip by diver-x

Puerto Rico Off The Beaten Path: 122 reviews and 203 photos

Vieques, an island on the east end of Puerto Rico, has been in the news quite a bit although the news has not been pleasant. The US Army conducts war games on a portion of the island. The activities include shelling a beach where sea turtles nest. Before and after the war games take place, protests occur on the island and many people are arrested.

Understandably, many tourists and locals stay away from Vieques. However, we found it to be a delightful respit from the holiday-weekend hubub that we found on Culebra. Once off the ferry from Fajardo, we located a rental car agency by phone - unfortunately, a car is essential on Vieques.

We stayed at La Finca Caribe (see Accomodations #2), a casual inn/pension/camp, which suited us very well. We snorkeled at Green Beach and in the late afternoon, body-surfed on a beautiful secluded beach that we had all to ourselves (pictured). At night, we took a kayak tour of Mosquito Bay, a bioluminescent bay (see Must See Activities).
