Get out of Venice onto the islands in the Lagoon.
After a few days Venice can get claustrophobic, and anyway the islands dotted in the lagoon are part of Venice too. Take a vaporetto round the lagoon and stop off at Burano or Torcello.

Burano is notable for its brightly coloured houses and lacework - a bit touristy but pretty.

Torcello which had a larger population than Venice in the past, is now a marshy island with hardly any houses and a magnificent basilica with the most beautiful Byzantine mosaics - a fabulous last judgement, and a madonna on a gold background. Torcello was one of the highlights of our trip last March.

And just to add to it all, we arrived back in Venice by boat at St Mark's Square at sunset.

Address: Islands in the Venetian Lagoon.
