Across from the Hofburg is the infamous Loos Haus (or so it was back when it was constructed at the turn of the century). The architect was Adolf Loos but the newer style of architecture (Jugendstil) was frowned upon by the general public. At the time there was a terrible outcry but in the end, the building was not torn down. Still Adolf Loos had to agree to add a minimum number of flower pots to the windows. Against his will, he did so and the building was allowed to remain standing. All the same the Emporer Franz Joseph ordered the curtains to be permanently closed on that side of the Hofburg, as he refused to look out his window upon such an abomination of architecture...
