Styria is frequently referred to as Austria's 'green province.' Extensive forests cover about half of it and grassland and vineyards account for a further quarter. Located in the south of the country, the area has a wealth of scenery and cultural sights - ranging from the glacier-covered mountain of Dachstein to the gentle hills of the wine country south of the provincial capital of Graz (with 250.000 inhabitants Austria's second largest city). But the mountains of Upper Styria in the north, with their rich resources of iron ore and the iron and steel industry which has grown up there, have also given the economy of the province a distinctly industrial character.
The Dachstein-Tauern-Region is among the biggest ski-resorts in Austria. 9 mountains, 167 km of runs and 88 lift-Facilities make it a perfect destinations for beginners and experts. The 4-mountain ski-connection make access to this snow-experience fast and easy. Skiing the whole year trough at 2700 m on the Dachstein-glacier.
