JERUSALEM: The Walls of Jerusalem. The wall in the very foreground of the the picture would be the Eastern wall, the wall going off to the background would be the south wall.
The present walls of Jerusalem are additions from different periods of construction. They were rebuilt in their final form, as they appear today, by the Turks under their great ruler Suleiman the Magnificent in 1542 A.D. In these walls, which are 2 1/2 miles in circumference and average 40 feet in height, there are 34 towers and 8 gates.
The New Gate, Damascus Gate, and Herods Gate in the Northern Wall; St. Stephens Gate and the Golden Gate(which was closed by the TURKS in 1530) in the Eastern Wall; the Dung gate and Zion Gate in the Southern Wall and the Jaffa Gate in the Western Wall.
