"Summerpalace" Summer Palace Tip by monica78

Summer Palace, Beijing: 310 reviews and 617 photos

The Summer Palace consists of fragments of an expensive dream. The ambitious Empress Dowager Cixi diverted money intended for a naval fleet and in 1888 began rebuilding abandoned royal gardens into a residence and vast park of outstanding beauty.

Not all the original structures remain; foreign forces tried to burn the palace in retaliation for the Boxer Rebellion of 1900. The Long Corridor (700 meters/2,297 feet long), painted with mythical scenes, frames glorious Kunming Lake, which is the centerpiece of the park. A 17-arch bridge connects to South Lake Island; note the fine bronze ox on the mainland side. The palace complex is divided into four areas?temples, places for strolling and contemplation, official greeting areas, and residences. Furniture and personal belongings of Cixi are displayed.

The lake is used for boating and swimming in summer and skating in winter. Hire a rowboat and absorb the splendor of the scene. The park is very crowded in summer.
