  Clifford's Tower
by cheekymarieh

It is one of the last remnants of York castle and a reminder of the worst outbreak of anti-Semitic violence in English history. In 1190, Christian merchants tried to erase their debts to Jewish bankers by destroying the city?s Jewish community. On the last Sabbath before Passover, 150 Jews took refuge a tower that previously stood on this site and, faced with the prospect of starvation or butchery, committed suicide.
