  Alexander Column

Imperial Guards killed hundreds of demonstrators here in the ?Bloody Sunday? that launched the 1905 Revolution. In October 1917 the Bolsheviks led the assault that forced the Mensheviks? resignation.

In 1991, the square was the scene of debates to change the name of the city back to St Petersburg. Today the main hazards in the square are the horse drawn carriages. If you?re like me, you will run at the sight of the approaching horses!
