No matter what your beliefs it is still an amazing sight to see. The outside is a magnificent edifice and the interior is just as spectacular with lots of gold decorated and religious paintings and other works of art.
It was built on the site of the tomb of St Peter and original construction began in 326AD. The present structure dates from around 1564 and part of the design was by Michaelangelo. It is of Renaissance design. At the rear there is the entrance to the Vatican Grottoes where there are the tombs of previous Popes.
The dome is 452 feet high and to climb up to the top you have to negotiate 537 steps. There is a lift though part of the way up for the less energetic.
A word of warning - make sure you don't have shorts on if you are a woman otherwise you will not be able to enter, I remember wandering around in culottes (the longest things in my luggage) that were actually pulled down to my hips so that I could go in. Fortuantely I had a long top on which covered what I had done!
