The chateau was built for Louis XIII. The palace was raided during the French Revolution, but has supposedly been restored to its original state (although I am sure that they have forgotten to return half of the furniture!). The gardens were the most interesting part of our trip. They are beautifully landscaped with some spectacular fountains and statues.

This is another World Heritage Site and is best known for the many treaties that have been signed there.

It wasn't one of my favourite places. We felt that we had to go to say that we'd seen it and managed to get around in 20 minutes! I have to say that one of the reasons I didn't enjoy the tour inside was because it was so crowded. You are probably better goibg at opening time.

Entry to the Chateau costs 7.50 Euros. Open 9am - 6.30pm from April to October, otherwise 5.30pm the rest of the year. Closed Mondays.

Address: Versailles District, 78000 Versailles
Directions: Take the train to Versailles Chantier or Rive Droite. Or the RER to Versailles Rive Gauche.
