"The Old Town in Warsaw" Poland Things to Do Tip by a.g.roberts

Poland Things to Do: 398 reviews and 656 photos

The old part of Warsaw was systematically destroyed by the Nazi's in 1944 in retaliation for the Polish uprising which occurred near the end of the war. Though eventually defeated, the Polish resistence managed to keep the German army at bay for several months. Pictures of the old town in 1945 will show that it was reduced to rubble and nothing over about ten feet high was left standing. Incredibley, the whole old part of Warsaw was reconstructed and today you'd be hard pressed to tell the buildings weren't the originals. Winding your way through the narrow streets and alleyways and enjoying cups of coffee in the numerous cafes is a great way to spend an afternoon.
