The walk is by the lake shore & you can watch a crested grebe dive nonchalantly for fish - & very successfully, it seems, if the sparkling silver that it surfaces with is anything to judge by.

In the late afternoon we strolled by the lake. The Borromean Islands are so close to the shore they are clear in the afternoon sun. The terraced garden has four posts like some giants bed from which the canopy has disappeared.

Elderly people occupy the benches watching the evening promenade of which we have become a part. They examine each passer-by with a quick glance that you know assesses you entirely to their satisfaction. The glance quickly moves on to the next strollers.

The lake resembles a fjord. Our first sight of it was as the taxi-driver paused as we came down the winding road into Stresa from the main road. It is truly a large lake with yachts seeming mere white dots. Some of the older houses that overlook the lake have viewing areas, like lighthouse tops, built on their houses.

The place is as if you have stepped back in time. It feels like one imagines the seaside towns of Britain were when they were the refined place to go.
